Long lost to the flickering pages of history, long lost to the attentions of the masses, Amphicoelias Fragillimus, never really recieved any credit - even from the person who discovered it. If proven, Amphicoelias Fragillimus, could well be the largest recorded animal ever to have lived; the mysterious Amphicoelias Fragillimus of the Late Jurassic of North America. When unearthed in 1878 by the then extremely famous American Palaeontologist, Edward Drinker Cope, only a single vertebrae (backbone) of the animal was found. However, as shown on the picture to the right, this vertebrae alone, was huge. By comparison with other Dinosaurs in the same, Sauropod Family, many renowned experts of these types of Dinosaurs, have estimated and agreed on a likely average overall size of; 56 metres long, 19 metres tall (that’s not even standing on it’s hind legs) and a tonnage of at least 120 Tonnes. Nevertheless, it is still reasonable to suggest a maximum size of over 60 metres long, 24 metres tall (yep, and still not on it’s hind limbs) and a colossal weight of over 130-150 Tonnes. The Blue Whale is of moderate size when compared with this leviathan. The all too famous Diplodocus, is tiny when compared with Amphicoelias Fragillimus, being less than half the length at 27-30 Metres long, 5 metres tall and ‘only’ 25 tonnes in weight. Surely, the greatest Metazoan life-form that has ever existed, this regal animal would have no natural predators, even when less than half grown. It is possible that the very ground shook as this creature walked over it, and it has been cautiously guessed, that they could live for centuries – it may have been that the mighty animals could have surpassed their 300th year alive. The sheer size of this genus of Sauropod Dinosaur, may have put it at some disadvantage though, as it may well have had a hard time trying to breed at such sizes, and the immensity of the bodies, would have reduced their top speed to a little over 5 miles per hour. This was not that much of a problem, though, where predation is concerned, as these were invincible fortresses of flesh. Other that, the only remaining problem of being that big, would be that they may have suffered badly if drought or deforestation (caused by Natural Disasters such as forest fires) seriously damaged the vegetation and water supply, the giant Dinosaurs may have starved. Even smaller Sauropods would perish if they could not acquire enough food to eat – to get sufficient energy from the mainly poor-grade food, they would have eaten all day long just to survive. Amphicoelias Fragillimus – the biggest animal ever to have lived. (possibly)
